A mixed reception by the critics .......

"...one of the best..."

" Her own understanding of children is as great as her knowledgeof what makes a good story. The combination has enabled Miss Ross to write what must be quite one of the best children's books to be published in time for Christmas this year."
        Church Times 24 December 1942

"...unsuitable for young children..."

"A mixed bag of 'fairy stories. Some are pleasantly
old fashioned... others are unsuitable for young
children who would need a vast amount of tiresome
explanation when it comes to  such things as "possession
being nine tenths of the law..."

East Anglian Daily Times 3 December 1942
Hensel and Caterina in the Cathedral Square
"On the top of the cathedral was a weathercock, golden and proud. It did not look very big when you saw it from the ground, but people said it was as big as a man, and Hensel used to look up at it as he sat begging in the cathedral square and imagine himself riding on its back, flying about at midnight all over the lands and seas...."
