The Beetle who lived alone
DIANA ROSS
Illustrated by Kaye
Faber 1941
Once there was a beetle who got tired of living alone.
"I will find someone to live with me." he said, "who will listen to my stories in the evenings."
So he went along the road till he met a duck.
"Good morning," said he.
"Good morning," said she. "Where are you going to all by yourself?"
"I am looking for someone to live with," said he.
"Oh! come and live with me," said the duck. "There's plenty of room on the pond."....

"Oh, dear me! No! I never could stand the water. Not since my poor father was drowned in a cart rut."
"How sad," said the duck, "I am sure that upset you."
And away she swam on the water, quacking gaily.
